THE ORIGIN
Riverbank Intelligence was founded by Rachel Fung.
The system was designed from five years working inside a single family office, where Rachel managed communications across the boundary between capital ownership and portfolio company leadership. That role placed her at the centre of every governance dynamic the system now measures: how decisions were made and by whom, how information was shaped before it reached the principal, how authority was distributed (or assumed) across operating businesses, how talent was managed, and how alignment between owners and executives was maintained or lost.
She saw the same structural patterns repeat across every portfolio company. Decision authority concentrated in one person. Information curated before it reached the board. Key institutional knowledge carried by individuals who could leave at any time. Strategic alignment assumed rather than tested.
These were measurable conditions. They were present everywhere. And they were measured nowhere. That observation is the origin of the Friction Index™.

TRAINING AND RESEARCH
From practice to evidence
Rachel studied Psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where her training centred on behavioural observation methodology, structured psychological interviewing, and cross-cultural response pattern analysis. Her research lab work focused on how people signal, filter, and distort information in structured settings, and how trained observers can detect the gap between what is presented and what is accurate.
That training is the foundation of every diagnostic protocol inside Riverbank OS™.
Rachel holds an MSc in Business and Organisational Psychology from Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University, where her work applied clinical and behavioural measurement principles directly to organisational governance in private capital environments.
Her doctoral research will provide the first empirical evidence that reducing organisational governance friction, as measured by the Friction Index™, directly protects enterprise value and strengthens exit outcomes in PE-backed and family-owned portfolio companies.
METHODOLOGY
01
Clinical Diagnostic Reasoning
Every score follows a structured evidence chain with a documented reasoning trail. Diagnosticians are trained in clinical-grade protocols designed to separate observation from interpretation.
02
Psychometric Rigour
All dimensions are scored by two independent diagnosticians. Scores that diverge beyond a defined threshold trigger mandatory calibration before any result is finalised.
03
Multi-Source Triangulation
Every assessment draws on multiple independent data sources. Every score is grounded in converging evidence from more than one source.
04
Evidence Hierarchy
Data sources carry different weight depending on their independence and verifiability. The hierarchy is applied consistently across every assessment.
05
Exam-Grade Quality Assurance
The scoring and calibration protocols were developed from quality assurance systems used in high-stakes international assessment, where scoring consistency across thousands of candidates is mandatory. The same architecture of independent scoring, senior verification, and systematic calibration is applied to every governance assessment.
06
Board Pack Forensics
Each quarter, specific claims from the company’s board pack are selected and verified against source data. Discrepancies are classified by type.
